What size TV stand do you need?
Measure the TV and its base
A television’s advertised size is the screen diagonal. A “55-inch TV” is not 55 inches wide. Find the full dimensions for your exact TV model, including its stand or feet.
- Width: measure the complete TV and the outside edges of its feet.
- Depth: include the entire base, not just the slim screen.
- Weight: use the TV’s weight with its base attached.
Compare those measurements with the furniture’s usable top and stated TV capacity. Every part of the base must be supported. Curved tops, raised edges, and corner shapes can leave less usable surface than the overall cabinet dimensions suggest.
Screen size and width are different measurements
This reference estimates the visible width of a flat 16:9 screen. It excludes the bezel and base, so use your TV’s manufacturer specifications to make the final choice.
| Screen diagonal | Screen width |
|---|---|
| 43 inches | 37.5 inches |
| 50 inches | 43.6 inches |
| 55 inches | 47.9 inches |
| 65 inches | 56.7 inches |
| 75 inches | 65.4 inches |
| 85 inches | 74.1 inches |
Plan for more than the screen
For a wall-mounted TV, choose the cabinet around your equipment and room layout; check the TV mount separately. For a fireplace console, follow the exact model’s installation and clearance instructions.
Shop by cabinet width
Use your measurements to narrow the collection, then check the dimensions and capacity on each product page.
Common questions
Will a 60-inch TV stand hold a 65-inch TV?
The numbers alone cannot confirm a fit. A 65-inch TV describes its diagonal screen size; a 60-inch stand describes furniture width. Compare the TV’s actual dimensions, complete base footprint, weight, and the cabinet’s stated limits.
How much wider should the cabinet be than the TV?
Extra width can leave room for accessories and create a balanced appearance. The amount is a style choice after you satisfy the TV and furniture manufacturers’ support and capacity requirements.
What should I check for a soundbar or receiver?
Compare the device dimensions with the usable shelf opening or top surface. Include cable connections, ventilation clearance, and the TV’s lower edge so a soundbar does not block the screen or remote receiver.
